Jessica Chastain Graces Cannes Poster, Tribeca Shortlist Joins Apple TV and More — Indiewire’s Thursday Rundown
Cannes’ annual International Critics Week (La Semaine de la Critique, if you’re feeling formal), has unveiled the official poster in celebration of its 55th anniversary. The new poster features Jessica Chastain in an especially lush still from Jeff Nichols’ “Take Shelter,” which won the Nespresso Grand Prize at the 50th edition of the section, back in 2011. Should we be expecting a Nichols repeat this year with his “Loving”? Here’s hoping!

– In further Cannes news, the festival’s Fabrique des Cinemas du Monde program, aimed at aiding talented young filmmakers from emerging countries, has announced its ten finalists who have been invited to have their projects go through the prestigious program. The lineup includes four first feature films, six second feature films, two documentaries, four director-producers, four female directors and two female producers. – Want to get the Tribeca experience at home? The Tribeca Shortlist subscription service, which streams an ad-free collection of films like “American Psycho,” “Layer Cake” and “Good Will Hunting,” is now available for Apple TV. Check out film collections selected by folks like Craig Ferguson, Alec Baldwin and Tyler Perry, as well as a curated catalog of indie classics and studio greats. Tribeca Shortlist is available for $4.99 a month now.
– The Nashville Film Festival has announced the full lineup for its 47th edition, including highlights “High-Rise,” “The Lobster,” “Weiner,” “Chevalier” and “Cameraperson.” This year’s festival boasts 271 films and 48 premieres. It runs from April 14-23 in Nashville, Tennessee. Check out their full lineup here.
– Roger Michell will direct “My Cousin Rachel,” starring Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin, Holliday Grainger, Iain Glen and Simon Russell Beale, based on Daphne Du Maurier’s book of the same name. The film is billed as “a dark romance” that “ells the story of a young Englishman who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.” It was previously made into a film by Henry Koster in 1952.
– Netflix has ordered its first original series to be shot and produced in Spain. Set in the 1920s, the 16-episode hour-long drama series will focus on four women living in Madrid — but from starkly different backgrounds — who are hired to work as switchboard operators for Spain’s only telephone service. The series was co-created by Ramon Campos, who produced the Spanish series “Velvet” and “Gran Hotel,” and his writing partner, Gema Neira. Carlos Sedes is set to direct the series, which is scheduled to be released globally in 2017.
– Women In Film, LA and The Black List announced today that they have joined forces to create a television lab for female writers. The brand new Women In Film/The Black List Episodic Lab will run for eight weeks beginning in August of this year. Eight women writers will be selected to participate in this first lab, which will consist of script development, workshopping sessions and Master Classes with established writers and industry executives. Lab participants will be hosted by the Black List website for free and have their final pilots read by a variety of agencies and networks, to be announced at a later date.
