Watch: A Boy Figures Out Who He is in This Exclusive Trailer for ‘Bad Hair’ by Mariana Rondon
From writer/director Mariana Rondon and producer Marite Ugas, “Bad Hair” (or “Pelo Malo”) is a weighty family story set in Caracas, Venezuela that seeks to magnify onto the big screen the urban family violence and domestic disorder that causes problems throughout Latin America. “Bad Hair” stars Samuel Lange as protagonist Junior, and Samantha Castillo as his mother, the central dramatic relationship of the film.

A boy who is self-consious about his “bad hair,” Junior hopes that straightening and restyling his curls to match a famous pop star will help earn his mothers love. This does not have the desired effect, as the mother grows to feel more and more put off by her child the more he insists on changing himself. In this “Bad Hair” trailer, she is told by her own mother that there is nothing she can do about her boy maturing, becoming who he is.
Rondon is the filmmaker behind “Postcards from Leningrad” in 2007. “Bad Hair,” an official selection in Toronto and Tribeca, is being distributed by FiGa Films/Cinema Tropical and will open at the Film Forum on November 19.
