Universal Wants Javier Bardem as Frankenstein in its Monsters Universe

What’s the most you ever lost on a science experiment? Universal is looking to answer that question, as the studio is reported by Variety to be in talks with Javier Bardem to star in its “Frankenstein” reboot. The studio’s burgeoning Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe already counts the likes of Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe among its stars, and Bardem — who won an Oscar for playing a different kind of monster in “No Country for Old Men” — would be another get.

Cruise is headlining the rebooted “Mummy” franchise, with next year’s film also starring Crowe as Dr. Jekyll — a role for which Bardem was previously considered. Among the movies being developed by the studio is a new take on “Bride of Frankenstein,” but Bardem (or whoever the role ends up going to) is likely to first appear in an earlier film.

Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Invisible Man films are all in the works as well, with overlapping characters à la Marvel’s interrelated “Avengers” movies. “The Mummy” arrives first on June 9, 2017.
