Watch: Jennifer Lawrence is Gunning for the Oscar in New ‘Joy’ Trailer

They say don’t judge a movie by its trailer, but the new official preview for David O. Russell‘s “Joy” suggests a surefire winner and a potential Oscar powerhouse. After the acclaimed hat trick of “The Fighter,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” — which boast 25 Oscar nominations and three wins among them — it’s wise to never bet against Russell, especially when he’s with his dynamite muse Jennifer Lawrence.

The official “Joy” synopsis reads: “‘Joy’ is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.”

In typical Russell fashion, the new trailer is full of exhilarating camera movements, a rock soundtrack courtesy of The Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” and a stacked ensemble, including Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Elisabeth Röhm and Dascha Polanco.

“Joy” opens in theaters December 25.
