Just days after the New York Film Festival lined up the world premiere of Don Cheadle’s directorial debut “Miles Ahead,” the fall film festival circuit continues to take shape thanks to the 72nd Venice Film Festival, which has secured the world premiere of Scott Cooper‘s “Black Mass.” The Johnny Depp-starring drama will screen out-of-competition.

Based on the book of the same name by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, the drama stars Depp as notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who became an FBI informant to eliminate criminal competition from the ’70s to the early ’90s. The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton and Peter Sarsgaard, among many others. The film will be released on September 18.

The Venice Film Festival runs September 2-12. As previously announced, the adventure thriller “Everest” will open the event.
