Amy Adams is pulling double duty at the Venice Film Festival, starring in the noir drama “Nocturnal Animals” and Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction thriller “Arrival.” Tomorrow the alien drama will be screened for critics, and before they praise or shoot down the Oscar contender, two new clips, via The Film Stage, have been released.

Set in the aftermath of an alien invasion, the government brings in an esteemed linguist, Louise Banks (Adams), to attempt to decipher their language and figure out their intent on Earth.

Based on Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life,” which Eric Heisserer adapted, Villeneuve told The Film Stage that he loved that the short story had a lot of layers to it.

“One of them that deeply touched me is this idea that someone is in contact with death. What would happen if you know how you will die, when you will die? What will your relationship with life, love, your family and friends, and with your society be? By being more in relationship with death, in an intimate way with the nature of life and its subtleties, it would bring us more humility,” he stated. “Humanity needs that humility right now. We are in an era with a lot of narcissism. We are at the point where we are dangerously disconnected from nature. That’s what this beautiful short story was for me –a way to get back into a relationship with death and nature, and the mystery of life.”

That “mystery of life” puts Adams in an unexpected and potentially dangerous situation when she is asked to make contact with the unannounced guests. These two clips show the actress preparing to face the aliens after a dozen pods enter the atmosphere. Check them out below.

“Arrival” lands in theaters on November 11.
