This is a Test: “Source Code” Will Go VOD First July 8

“Source Code” will go to VOD July 8, more than two weeks ahead of its DVD/Blu-Ray release date.

Summit Home Entertainment will release “Source Code” on the physical disks July 26. However, the company took pains to say that the arrangement doesn’t represent a shortening of the industry window between theatrical and home entertainment releases.

“This particular case will test the demand for viewing a bigger budgeted film digitally prior to the release of physical discs,” the company said in a release. “This test aligns with the studio’s ongoing efforts to find the best way to present its films digitally.”
 
This is the first time that Summit has varied from its position of offering titles day and date on VOD and discs. Whether that will be the case going forward depends on audience response to “Source Code.”
 
“As the way a consumer’s consumption of feature films evolves, we are always looking for new ways that meet these demands,” said Steve Nickerson, President, Summit Home Entertainment.  “While we are optimistic about the consumer appetite for this type of home entertainment release pattern, we are only conducting a test in this case and not making an overall policy shift at this time. Once the results are in we will analyze the data and see what the consumer has to say.”
