‘Slice’: Chance the Rapper’s Feature Film Debut Proved to Him Why He Doesn’t Want an Acting Career
Chance the Rapper might have made his feature length acting debut in “Slice,” but don’t expect him to leave the music industry behind any time soon. The rapper admitted during the “Slice” world premiere in Chicago that he didn’t have a great time acting and would much rather work on the creative side of filmmaking in the future.
“Slice” is the brainchild of Chance’s longtime collaborator Austin Vesely, best known for directing the rapper’s music videos for “Juice,” “Everybody’s Something,” and “Angels.” The A24-backed horror-comedy centers on a strange town, Kingfisher, where pizza delivery boys are being murdered and a werewolf is on the loose. The town’s residents band together to try and solve the murders before any more take place.
Following the world premiere screening of “Slice,” Chance took part in a Q&A with Vesely and his co-stars Paul Scheer, Zazie Beetz, and Rae Gray. Although Chance is a fan of the final product, he admits that making the film wasn’t as fun as he expected. When Scheer asked if he would continue acting, Chance gave a surprising answer.
“Just being honest,” Chance said. “I don’t like shooting movies, I don’t like being on a set or in a trailer. Austin knows this to be true. And it’s very different from the way that I execute my music after its written.”
“But the reward,” Chance continued. “The finalized product is always something that I thoroughly enjoy for a long time afterwards. So, I think if I do end up doing any more cinema it will be probably be a long, long time from now.”
Despite not wanting to pursue an acting career, Chance is still interested in filmmaking and hinted that he might step behind the camera instead. “I do think what I really enjoy is the creative process,” Chance said. “I love how Austin made this vision so tangible and I would love to get into that side at some point, but yeah definitely not sitting in a fucking trailer.”
