After successfully partnering up on “Mr. Holmes” last year to the tune of nearly $18 million, Roadside Attractions and Miramax are joining forces once again to distribute the well-reviewed Sundance romance “Southside With You.” Marking the directorial debut of Richard Tanne, the film imagines just how exactly Barack and Michele Obama’s first date might have gone down.

The director takes a page from Richard Linklater’s playbook in reducing the couple’s story to a walk-and-talk one-day structure. Tika Sumpter co-developed the film and stars as Michelle, while Parker Sawyers, best known for small roles in “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” plays Barack.
Deadline reports the film is being sold in the $2 million ballpark and that the deal will be finalized tonight in Berlin. The film earned very favorable reviews at its Sundance premiere last month.
