PODCAST: Fantastic Fest 2015: Tim League and Nicolas Winding Refn Are Love

One of the film calendar’s most anticipated spectacles is Fantastic Fest, a week-long descent into genre madness. The man at the helm, Tim League, also heads an expanding Drafthouse brand that encompasses distribution and exhibition and one of his biggest admirers is director Nicolas Winding Refn. The “Drive” director brought his very beautiful new art book to Fantastic Fest, a collection of vintage movie poster prints called “The Art of Seeing.” This week’s episode of Indiewire Influencers, recorded live from Austin, gets both of their perspectives on the festival that helped draw them together.

Although Refn’s films have played to the South Lamar audience, last year was his first time at the festival primarily as an audience member. “This is like going to a rock ‘n’ roll concert,” Refn said of the experience. “It reminded me how much fun it is going to the movies. I wish there were more places like that. We don’t have them in Europe at all.”

In their conversation with Indiewire Editor In Chief Dana Harris, League and Refn discuss the challenges of balancing the filmmaker’s vision with the demands of an ever-shifting theatrical landscape.
