As the news of Robin Williams’ apparent suicide broke, AMPAS responded nearly simultaneously by uploading a clip from its archive of Oscar telecasts, featuring Williams’ appearance onstage at the 51st Academy Awards, where he presented an honorary Oscar to Woody the Woodpecker creator Walter Lantz.
In the clip, which you can watch below, Oscar host Johnny Carson, introduces Williams as “America’s newest comedy sensation,” about to make his feature film debut in “Popeye.”
Sporting an appropriately turn-of-the-decade hairstyle, Williams doesn’t just pay tribute to Lantz’s work; he performs a tribute, complete with his skillful imitations.
