“I wanted to tell a story about growing up. Most stories about kids have that summer or that one moment. I wanted to say the whole thing.”

Richard Linklater and Ellar Coltrane are making the rounds to promote the film “Boyhood,” though judging by its theatrical performance thus far, it might not even be necessary. Linklater first stopped by Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” where Jon Stewart called him a Jedi for being able to begin a trajectory that went uninterrupted for 12 years. They discussed the casting of Coltrane, who aged from 7-19 years old on screen, and that of Lorelei Linklater, Richard’s own daughter who played Coltrane’s sister. “The good thing about that, I knew where she was every year; I could find her,” said the director. Check out the video below and keep reading to see what Ellar Coltrane had to say to Jimmy Fallon.

“People had this impression that we kept it under wraps, and we didn’t talk to press about it but we told all our friends and the truth is no one cared,” Coltrane told Fallon about the 12-year process of shooting “Boyhood,” which took up the better part of Coltrane’s young life and all of his acting career so far. For a while, Coltrane said, he was auditioning for other projects but decided that this movie deserved all of his attention. “How would you know that would be funny now six years ago?” Fallon asked about the “Star Wars” jokes in the movie. The answer Coltrane may have given earlier on in the interview: “I think [Linklater] does have some mystical powers.” Here are the videos from “The Tonight Show.”
