‘Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched’ Finds Humor in the Fight For Marriage Equality

Logline: An off-beat comedy about two small-town lesbians who decide to tie the knot and the ugly swell of hypocrisy they have to contend with.
Elevator Pitch: Dodie and Cheryl are two small-town lesbians who lead a quiet, modest life, accepted by most because they keep it to themselves. After they attend a neighbor’s shotgun wedding, Cheryl finds herself longing for more. She wants to count too. As wedding plans get underway, Dodie’s enthusiasm wanes. Resentment builds between them, coupled with an ugly swell of hypocrisy from their dogmatic community. In the vein of John Waters, “Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched” questions not only if the couple’s union can survive, but also why they would want to be part of such an f-ed up institution in the first place?

About the Film: Yes, gay marriage is now legal everywhere which is tremendous and historic. But the fight for equality is far from being over. Segregation was ruled illegal in the 50s and unfortunately that struggle very much continues to this day. Change comes in many different shapes and forms and steps and sizes. Getting a movie like this out there will have positive impact on the trajectory of LGBT civil rights. To be represented is to be seen, to matter. Having a voice challenges people to stand up and take notice, which increases understanding and builds acceptance. Stories change hearts and minds.
