Kino Lorber has acquired all North American distribution rights to “The Great Museum,” the Johannes Holzhausen documentary and Berlin Film Festival entry that won the critics’ Caligari Award in the Forum section. The film is set to make its U.S. premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 26 and May 1.

“The Great Museum” takes a behind-the-scenes look at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, the important art institution known for its Breughels, among other works. The film also takes a look at a number of the curators and important employees of the institution.

A portrait of the politics, branding and marketing in the modern museum field, the film was well-received for its sense of humor and intelligence regarding what it takes to keep a museum alive. Kino Lorber plans to release the film in the fall and release it on digital platforms, the educational market and packaged media by early 2015.
