It’s been about 12 years since De La Soul released their last album, “The Grind Date,” and yesterday marked the released of their latest LP, “and the Anonymous Nobody…” The journey to creating the album was a hard one and began when the hip-hop group launched a Kickstarter to fund the project.

After raising an overwhelming $600,000, more than six times the amount they requested, De La Soul celebrated the album’s release by premiering a 30-minute documentary, “We’re Still Here (now)… a documentary about nobody.”

The short film details the creation of the LP, beginning with the Kickstarter announcement to the midway point, to the fine-tuning and perfecting the tracks that would make it on the album.

“We invited a host of musicians to jam, and the jam sessions go on like maybe over 200 hours,” a group member says in the voiceover. “We recorded this thing for like years.”

“We’re Still Here (now)…” also features live footage from concerts and interviews with artists like Common, Damon Albarn and Tommy Boy Records founder Thomas Silverman, who have all been impacted by the group’s music.
