‘Unbroken: Path to Redemption’ Trailer: Angelina Jolie-Directed Biopic Gets a Faith-Based Sequel From ‘God’s Not Dead’ Team

The faith-based filmmaking world is wasting zero time. Hot on the heels of the breakout success of Christian indie “I Can Only Imagine” this past weekend, faith-based production company Pure Flix has released a first look at their next big feature: a sequel to Angelina Jolie’s 2013 true-life drama “Unbroken,” albeit one with a very different bent than the one put on screen by the filmmaker nearly four years ago.

Later this year, Pure Flix — also known for releasing the “God’s Not Dead” films, soon to be a trilogy — will release their sequel, “Unbroken: Path to Redemption,” a Christian-leaning follow-up to Jolie’s Louis Zamperini biopic “Unbroken.” None of the Jolie film’s original cast is involved with the film (producer Matthew Baer is behind both films), which follows the war hero upon his return to the States after being held as a prisoner of war during World War II and his eventual turn to born-again Christianity.

“God’s Not Dead” filmmaker Harold Cronk directs the film, which follows the final third of Laura Hillenbrand’s best-selling book about the war hero, which was also the basis of Jolie’s film. This new sequel stars Samuel Hunt as Zamperini, with Merritt Patterson on board as his eventual wife, Cynthia Applewhite-Zamperini. “Path to Redemption” is not the first Zamperini film to focus on his post-WWII life: In 2015, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association released its own documentary about his later years, many of them spent following the recently deceased Evangelical Christian minister.

And it’s Graham who will apparently come to be a major character in the film — here played by his own grandson, Will Graham — as the film follows Zamperini’s struggle to adjust back to normal life after his horrific war-time experiences, eventually leading him to the evangelist preacher and his particular flavor of Christian faith.

Check out the first trailer for “Unbroken: Path to Redemption” below, thanks to Entertainment Weekly. The film opens on October 5.
