Previously, from Rob T. Jenkins: ‘The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore’ Teases More About What It Isn’t Than What It Is

It wasn’t that I was procrastinating my Christmas shopping, exactly. I just didn’t know how much Christmas shopping I needed to do this year, for the longest damn time. I mean, my sister’s easy enough — there’s that store in the mall that sells those little metal dragon statues with the crystals. (Susannah’s just crazy for dragons, don’t ask me why.) And Sammy and Jessie, no way I’d forget about them, if only because they email me their lists on the first of December every year. With links to Amazon and all the other websites. I’d be offended, except it does make things easier.

But as I was going through all their bookmarks (damn, that American Girl stuff sure adds up, but I’d rather be buying doll clothes for my 12-year-old daughter than dealing with a 12-year-old daughter who thinks she’s too old for dolls and is old enough for other stuff) I realized that I didn’t know if I needed to get something for Karen, too. So maybe I got distracted, looking around on the internet, trying to think of something that says “Please let me come home, it really was just the one time with Linda, no matter what those text messages might have implied.”

And yeah, that’s what lead to me being on the AMC site (maybe in case they had something cute from “Mad Men” for sale that Karen would like? She loves the redhead on that show.) and seeing that there was finally a real sort of trailer for “Better Call Saul”! Wow! I didn’t expect that, especially not just a couple of days before Christmas! And heck, this trailer actually looks pretty good!

I mean, I’m not real sure what’s happening here, but man, the guy who plays Saul looks like he’s gonna act up a storm, and I always really liked that other guy, who talks about money being “beside the point.” Forget what I’ve seen him in, but lots of stuff, I’m sure, and always really great in it… Michael McKean! That’s the guy’s name.

So, maybe this trailer isn’t the most revealing, but I felt good after watching it. Like I knew what this show was gonna be, maybe, after all. And then, something even better happened — right after I got done watching, I got a call from Karen, asking me if I wanted to come to Christmas dinner! Not Christmas morning, but Christmas dinner, at least. That’s more than nothing, all right.

This time yesterday, I didn’t know if Karen would finally let me do more than hover on the front porch of the house I still pay the mortgage on while the kids got their bags packed. Didn’t know if she’d finally live up to what she’s been promising me for over a year now — real, honest forgiveness.

Nothing she owes me, but still the best present I could ever ask for. This “Better Call Saul” trailer? That would be second-best.

Rob T. Jenkins lives in Richmond, Virginia and is definitely a real person. “Better Call Saul” premieres February 8, 2015 on AMC.
