Sundance Versus the Oscars: Surprises and Snubs From Park City to the 2018 Nominations

The Sundance Film Festival is always a busy time for covering new movies, and it doesn’t help matters that the Oscar nominations land in the middle of the chaos. While a range of first-time filmmakers launch their careers in the snow, a whole bunch of others get that much closer to the industry’s most coveted prize. It’s a striking contrast, and one that makes the puts the big conversations about the future of film in context. It also provides a lot of new information in a very short span of time. While Sundance provides a good opportunity to assess the marketplace, as the media eagerly tracks which movies sold and the size of the price tags, the Oscar nominations provide a snapshot of voter priorities and yield discussions far greater than the movies themselves.
