Passion projects from auteur filmmakers are always a reason to get excited, but when it’s a Christianity epic Martin Scorsese has been trying to make for nearly three decades, it’s almost impossible to contain one’s anticipation. “Silence,” which only got its Christmas release date last month, is one of the last major question marks in this year’s awards race, but the first trailer teases something we all pretty much expect: This epic is probably going to be one behemoth of a masterpiece.

Starring the likes of Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver and set during the 17th century, “Silence” follows two Jesuit priests who venture out into the Japanese jungle to find their mentor and spread the gospel of Christianity to the indigenous people. Their efforts are met with violence and persecution, and this thematic epic of religion and brutality is something Scorsese has been building to his entire career.
