PODCAST: Should You Watch the 'True Detective' Season 2 Finale?

“True Detective” Season 2 is  coming to an end, and — one way or another — you’re going to find out what happened. Be it by tuning in from the edge of your living room sofa or by a friend, co-worker or TV critic telling you second-hand, everyone has at least some level of interest in the final episode of a tumultuous second season. Reviews have been heatedly polarized, with some writers praising another dark journey from the fascinating mind of Nic Pizzolatto and others decrying an indecipherable script from a one-hit wonder.

With the amount of attention paid to the show, both good and bad, has “True Detective” become must-see TV? Completists and fans will certainly be tuning in, and HBO certainly be worried about a dip in the ratings. But should casual fans or TV fans in general feel obligated to watch a show that isn’t the best on TV or even the best drama of the summer? (“Hannibal,” “Mr. Robot,” “UnREAL,” “Orange is the New Black” and even “Deutschland 83” on SundanceTV are much more widely praised.)

Indiewire’s TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller and TV Critic Ben Travers dig into the topic on this week’s Very Good TV Podcast. Introducing options airing against “True Detective” at 9pm Sunday night, from “Humans” to “NFL Preseason Football,” the duo uses these other new choices to illustrate the good and bad of Nic Pizzolatto’s drama. Should you watch “True Detective” over what many consider a better drama, like ‘Humans” or “Ray Donovan”? Is the value of discussing the season finale more than watching live NFL action? Miller and Travers share their two cents in the podcast above.
