Awards Roundup: Diane Keaton to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award, Documentary Awards to Honor Norman Lear And More

– Diane Keaton will receive the 45th American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, its highest honor for a career in film. Keaton will receive the award at a gala tribute on June 8, 2017 in Los Angeles.
“Diane Keaton is one of the most beloved leading ladies of American Film,” Howard Stringer, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “Peerless in her mastery of both comedy and drama, she has won the world’s heart time and again by creating characters of both great strength and vulnerability. Her career as a director and producer is even further evidence of her passion for the art form and her seemingly boundless talents.”
Recent winners of the award include Mel Brooks, Jane Fonda, Morgan Freeman, Shirley MacLaine, Steve Martin and Mike Nichols.
– The International Documentary Association (IDA) will honor five individuals at the 32nd annual Documentary Awards. Norman Lear will receive the Amicus Award, Stanley Nelson will receive the Career Achievement Award, Ally Derks will receive the Pioneer Award, and Nanfu Wang will receive the Emerging Documentary Filmmaker.
“Our honorees this year include veteran and emerging filmmakers, illustrating how vital the documentary field is,” Simon Kilmurry, IDA’s Executive Director, said in a statement. “Stanley Nelson’s body of work is unsurpassed and Nanfu Wang is a bold and brave emerging talent. Ally Derks had the vision to found the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam, one of the oldest and certainly the largest documentary festival in the world, long before documentaries became cool. And Norman and Lyn Lear’s ongoing support of filmmakers and free-speech has allowed countless voices to be heard.”
Nominees for the 32nd Annual Documentary Awards will be announced in early November.
– Actress Rebel Wilson, filmmakers James Wan and Sir Ridley Scott, and Film Executive Greg Basser will be honored at the 2016 Australians in Film Awards on October 19 in Los Angeles. Wilson will receive the inaugural Screen NSW Annette Kellerman Award, presented by VOGUE Australia; Wan will receive the Fox Studios Australia International Award; Scott will be awarded with the Ausfilm International Award; and Village Roadshow Entertainment Group CEO, Greg Basser, will receive the Qantas Orry-Kelly International Award.
The inaugural Screen NSW Annette Kellerman Award honors trailblazing Australian women in Hollywood, while the Fox Studios Australia International Award is presented to filmmakers for their incredible contributions to international cinema. The Ausfilm International Award is awarded to an international filmmaker who has contributed to the Australian film industry.
-The first European University Film Award has announced its five nominees at Filmfest Hamburg, based on the lists of 50 feature films and 15 documentaries from the EFA Selections 2016. The Five films are Gianfranco Rosi’s “Fire at Sea,” Cristian Mungiu’s “Graduation,” Ken Loach’s “I, Daniel Blake,” Juho Kuosmanen’s “The Happiest Day in the Life of Ollie Mäki,” and Maren Ade’s “Toni Erdmann.”
The nominated films will be viewed and discussed in 13 universities in 13 countries, and each institution will select its favorite film. In early December, one student representative from each university will attend a two-day deliberation meeting to decide on the overall winner. The winning film will be announced on December 10, during the week of the European Film Awards.
