Fans of the Netflix original series “Stranger Things” rejoiced when the streaming service renewed the 80’s-influenced sci-fi series for a second season this past August. It seemed like Netflix held out from renewing the show for quite a while given the immense popularity of the show, but it turns out that Netflix had actually renewed “Stranger Things” for a second season before it initially premiered, and that creators and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer have been writing the new season for months.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers explained that Netflix kept the renewal secret on purpose in order to build up hype around the series. “They greenlit the second season before we even premiered,” says Matt. “So when everyone was going, ‘Is there going to be a second season?’ we had been writing the entire time. So we’ve been working on this almost all summer.”

“It drove me crazy,” says Ross. “‘Please, can’t we just tell everyone we’re doing a second season?'”

In the same interview, Matt and Ross discuss that they already had plans for where the series would continue past the first season when they began the series. They also talked about working with such a young cast, the episode titles for the next season that were teased in the renewal trailer, and reading Internet theories.

The second season of “Stranger Things” will premiere sometime in 2017.
