Xfinity TV's On Demand Awards Dub Magnolia Films King of Indie VOD

Magnolia Films was the reigning indie distributor at Comcast’s first-ever Xfinity TV On Demand Awards, which recognizes the most-watched films, television shows and musical acts on VOD. Of the top three VOD indie titles, two were Magnolia’s: “All Good Things” and “Centurion.”

Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles says he wasn’t surprised.

“I’m incredibly presumptuous,” he told indieWIRE. “I expected [the win].”

He’s got a point. Although Andrew Jarackei’s “All Good Things” only earned $367,000 in domestic ticket sales last year, Bowles said it earned $4 million from VOD and that Neil Marshall’s “Centurion” was similarly successful. (Xfinity declines to release the revenue or download numbers behind the winning films.)

Magnolia’s strategy calls for releasing all titles on VOD before going theatrical. So far, Bowles says, the method’s paid off.

“This year, we’ve already had enormous success with ‘Black Death’ and ’13 Assassins, he said. “[VOD] takes a lot of risk out of distributing theatrically. In fact, the VOD revenue gives us the chance to theatrically release the films. But the theatrical component plays a very important part. Our films are viewed as films that are of theatrical quality. That’s vital.”
