READ MORE: Music Box Films Swoops Down on Jonathan Franzen’s ‘Emptying the Skies’
“Emptying the Skies” is confronting the issue of migratory bird poaching.
The upcoming documentary, based on an essay from acclaimed author Jonathan Franzen, comes out of the revelation that songbird populations have been drastically declining for several decades. “Emptying the Skies” pays tribute to these tiny, globe-spanning songbirds, millions of which are inhumanely trapped and killed for a quick cash exchange on the black market.
The film centers on an intrepid squad of pan-European bird-lovers, waging a secret war against poachers to disrupt illegal trapping and to free as many as possible.
From directors Douglas Kass and Roger Kass, “Emptying the Skies” has already found acclaim with critics. Above, you can see the film’s exclusive poster debut; a dreamlike, triumphant vision of birds freely in flight. It perfectly captures the film’s great sense of hope, even as it’s tackling a rampant, widespread issue.
“Emptying the Skies” hits theaters on April 22 (better known as Earth Day).
