Summer TV Preview 2015: 7 Returning Shows Watch, from 'True Detective' 'Orange is the New Black'

Summer movies may get the most buzz at the box office, but this year’s TV season could give you more bang for your buck — if you take that phrase literally (more hours of content) or figuratively (as these shows will likely be better than most movies). To go along with our Summer TV Preview for new shows, Indiewire set up the above podcast to discuss seven returning programs we’re equally (if not more) excited to see.

Now, in interest of not being those people — you know, the kind of people who tease content easily absorbed via the written word, but only make it available by listening to/watching 30 minutes of “extra” information (I am eyeing you hard ESPN!) — we’ve listed our most anticipated summer series below, trusting you, our dear readers and loyal listeners, to still listen to the above podcast. Anyone who doesn’t want the order spoiled, stop reading now, listen and come back. Everyone else, take what you’ve earned by clicking on this piece.

7) “Extant”
6) “Penny Dreadful
5) “Rectify”
4) “Masters of Sex”
3) “Hannibal”
2) “True Detective
1) “Orange is the New Black

What?! How is “Orange is the New Black” ahead of “True Detective”?! That’s crazy! Who would make such a decision? How could they justify it? And where’s “Survivor’s Remorse”? Everyone loved that show (except that dumb Ben guy).

You’re just going to have to tune in to find out, suckers. Indiewire’s TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller and TV Critic Ben Travers dig into all seven shows on this week’s Very Good TV Podcast. You can listen to the episode above, and don’t forget to subscribe via Soundcloud or iTunes. Follow Indiewire on Twitter and Facebook for all your pertinent TV news — including continued discussion on all television happenings this summer — and check out Liz and Ben’s Twitter feeds for more, more, more.

Liz loves “Extant,” no matter what hesitancy you may hear in her words above, but check out this piece to see her true feelings emerge (ever so slightly).

Ben also interviewed the creator of “Penny Dreadful” and even asked him inappropriate, unwarranted questions about the new Bond film he’s writing. John Logan is awesome, though, so he answered anyway.

Haven’t watched “Rectify”? Read this interview and you will boot it up on Netflix right away. Or this review for Season 2. Or this trend piece on the family noir. (We really love “Rectify.”)

So, Gillian Anderson is coming to “Hannibal” this summer. Read Liz’s interview with her to see why that’s such an immense, awesome and amazing deal.

“Masters of Sex” is dark but romantic. Here’s a list of more shows with the same traits (and why they’re awesome because of it).

Okay, okay. We know all you care about is “True Detective.” Here’s your pot of gold for making it to the end.
