’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Isn’t Your Average Blockbuster Sequel (Review)

Netflix‘s “Black Mirror” adaptation has been getting together an excellent roster of talent over the past couple months, including filmmakers like Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Hanna”) and Jakob Verbruggen (“Code 37”), and now Deadline reports that “10 Cloverfield Lane” breakout director Dan Trachtenberg will be joining the fold to helm an episode.

This marks the first major career move for Trachtenberg after earning stellar reviews for his mystery box thriller this past March. Given the way he expertly calculated tension and grounded a science-fiction story in as much reality as possible, Trachtenberg seems like a natural fit for “Black Mirror.”

Based on the popular British anthology series of the same name, Netflix’s “Black Mirror” will similarly feature dark and satirical stories that explore society’s relationship with technology. Many critics have pegged the British version of the show as a modern day “Twilight Zone.” The original series premiered in 2011 on Channel 4 and ran for two seasons.

Netflix’s adaptation will be the first U.S. version of the series and the company has ordered 12 episodes for the debut season. The star-studded cast already includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mackenzie Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard and Alice Eve. No official release date has been set.
