FX Picks Up 'Tyrant,' Second Cousin 'Homeland,' Season 2

FX has picked up its freshman drama “Tyrant,” for a second season.

Created by Gideon Raff of “Homeland,” “Tyrant” centers on Basaam “Barry” Al-Fayeed, played by Adam Rayner. Barry is the son of a ruthless dictator, but as a teenager, he fled from his birthplace and settled in the United States. But the past, as we see in the show, has a way of catching up with you: When Barry decides to take his family to the place where he grew up, in order to attend his niece’s wedding, they become embroiled in the violence and politics of the region.

As Indiewire’s own critic observed earlier this year, in his initial review of the series, “Gideon Raff’s follow-up to “Homeland” is less addictive than his twisty Showtime who-dun-it, but it may prove a more worthwhile long-term investment.” In light of the fact that the show performed consistently over the course of the season, averaging (per the press release) 5.1 million total viewers, the network’s long-term investment makes sense.
