‘Stranger Things’: Why Netflix Hasn’t Chosen to Renew the Hit Show Yet
Netflix is known for many things, but transparency isn’t one of them. The streaming giant, which keeps ratings details private, has raised questions from “Stranger Things” fans for not yet renewing the throwback series, which has built an enthusiastic following since first being released three weeks ago. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos addressed these concerns yesterday at TCA.

“We always want to take some time to be thoughtful about the (renewal) process,” Sarandos said of a potential season two for the show, which stars Winona Ryder in her first major television role. “Stranger Things” takes place in a small Indiana town in the early 1980s and centers around the disappearance of a little boy, the sudden appearance of a girl with strange powers and the apparent conspiracy linking these seemingly supernatural events.
On the off chance it doesn’t get renewed, “Stranger Things” would be the first Netflix original series not to return for a second season. “Relative to what it costs, does it get an audience?” Sarandos added when discussing renewal criteria, which likely isn’t a problem for “Stranger Things.”
