‘Game of Thrones’: Kit Harington Evokes ‘Sopranos’ and ‘Breaking Bad’ Endings While Teasing Divisive Series Finale

Kit Harington is already starting to wave the warning flags about the “Game of Thrones” series finale. During the press rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of his role in Xavier Dolan’s “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” Harington was asked about the final run of “Thrones ” episodes, to which he guaranteed not every fan will be satisfied with the story’s conclusion.

“I think a TV series that’s spanned eight, nine years is an incredibly difficult thing to end,” Harington said. “I think not everyone’s going to be happy, you know, and you can’t please everyone. My favorite TV shows are ‘Sopranos,’ ‘Breaking Bad,’ and ‘The Wire,’ and they all ended in a way that…It’s never going to satisfy you.”

“The Sopranos” famously ended by cutting to black mid-scene. Tony Soprano sat with his family in a diner and observed a man who may or may not have been hitman sent to kill him before the finale abruptly ended. “Breaking Bad” ended on a similar ambiguous note, with Walter White on the ground after being shot. Police officers check are seen checking Walt’s pulse, but the show ends without revealing whether or not the character is officially dead or not. Does this mean “Thrones” will have a similarly polarizing end? Harington won’t say.

One thing “Thrones” fans do know is to expect is a ton of bloodshed in the final season. Sophie Turner made headlines over the summer when she said there will be “more death [in the final season] than all the years before.” HBO is set to premiere the final season of “Game of Thrones” in 2019.
