‘Star Trek’ New Series and Ship’s Name Are a Real ‘Discovery’

The next adventure in “Star Trek” will be a discovery for all.

At the “Star Trek” 50th anniversary panel at Comic-Con today, executive producer Bryan Fuller showed the first footage from the upcoming CBS All Access series. The image of the ship and the logo, which can be seen below, revealed the series’s new name: “Star Trek: Discovery.” The series title takes its name from the universe’s newest starship, the U.S.S. Discovery.

The new series “needs to continue to be progressive, to push boundaries,” Fuller told the Comic-Con crowd. “There’s nothing like the guiding light that Gene Roddenberry hung in the sky.”

He also confirmed that more anthology nature of the series. “We’re going to be telling stories like a novel, chapter by chapter by chapter,” he told the astounded Shatner, who pretended to not comprehend a non-episodic model.

Not much more could be revealed about “Discovery” at the time, but at a press conference later, Fuller confirmed that it will take place in the Prime timeline (ie — not within the J.J. Abrams films universe), but would not specify exactly when. The illustrious panel also included franchise series stars William Shatner, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan and Scott Bakula, and fellow EPs Heather Kadin and Rod Roddenberry, who is the son of late “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry.

CBS All Access’s “Star Trek: Discovery” premieres in January 2017.
