Tiffany Haddish Confirms She Would ‘Love’ to Host the Oscars — ‘That Would Be a Dream Come True’
When Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph took the stage at the 90th Academy Awards, viewers weren’t the only ones thinking she should come back in a more permanent capacity.
“Look, in my mind, Maya [Rudolph] and I auditioned for the ultimate job — because I thought we were getting paid for that presentation,” Haddish said after the SXSW premiere of her new TBS comedy, “The Last O.G.” “Then I found out we didn’t get paid, and I was like, ‘Well, I heard about gift bags,’ and they were like, ‘We don’t have any bags.’ ‘So what do I get?’ And they were like, ‘Well, there’s this bottle of wine — this $13 bottle of wine.'”
Haddish was asked by the moderator, Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh, if she would be interested in hosting the Oscars.
“I would love to do something like that,” Haddish said. “That would be a dream come true. I know my father would be extremely proud if I got to do that — as long as I got my paycheck.”
Following their presentation for Best Documentary Short and Best Live-Action Short at this year’s Oscars, Haddish and Rudolph earned a frenzy of attention for their sharp, lively, and altogether delightful routine. A petition started to circulate and numerous critics called for more prominent placement for both comedians in future ceremonies.
Also of note: When Haddish hosted “Saturday Night Live” in November 2017, she wore a white Alexander McQueen dress and said in her opening monologue she would definitely wear it again, fashion faux-pas be damned. “I spent a lot of money on this dress. This dress cost more than my mortgage.”
She fulfilled that promise in March, wearing the same dress to the Oscars — but she’s not done. During the SXSW Q&A, when complimented not only on the dress itself, but for breaking tradition and wearing an expensive gown twice, Haddish said, “Yeah, I’m gonna wear it again, too. You watch.”
It’s safe to say the world will be watching — hopefully on Oscar night 2019.
Haddish co-stars in “The Last O.G.” with Tracy Morgan. The upcoming series made its debut at SXSW Monday night, airing its first two episodes in a jam-packed Paramount Theater. It premieres April 3 at 10:30 p.m. ET on TBS.
