Oscar season arrives every fall without fail. But it remains largely mysterious until the summertime, when the lineup for the Toronto International Film Festival comes out. This week, with that epic list finally seeing the light of day, we got a better look at some of the more promising contenders. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson pick through the announcement to get a handle on the fall movie season — as well as some of the surprises they didn’t see coming.

But that’s not the only thing in the movie headlines this week. The duo also touch on film production company Relativity’s tragic bankruptcy, as well as whether Jason Segel’s performance as David Foster Wallace in “The End of the Tour” deserves all buzz. Plus, should you see the new “Mission: Impossible” movie? Thompson’s a fan, but Kohn has another recommendation. Listen to the full episode above.
