Universal Pictures debuted the first trailer for David Gordon Green‘s upcoming “Halloween” sequel at CinemaCon, and the footage did not disappoint when it comes to bloody horror. Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the franchise as Laurie Strode, the scream queen role that made her famous, and she was on hand at CinemaCon to debut the footage and tease the project.

“I heard what they were thinking and I immediately said yes,” Curtis said. “First of all, except for ‘Star Wars,’ I can’t think of another movie that the same actor playing the same character 40 years.”

Curtis went on to promise fans the sequel is “going to scare the living shit out of you.”

“This isn’t the piece of shit we made back in the 90s and I apologize for anyone who had to endure it,” she continued, speaking about her 1999 film “Virus.” “This movie is hella scary – and you guys please tweet that I said hella.”

The first “Halloween” trailer confirmed some of the details that had been rumored about the project. The new “Halloween,” directed by David Gordon Green and co-written by Danny McBride, serves as a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher classic. For this reason, Strode is not the sister of killer Michael Myers. The sequel takes place 40 years after the events of the original.

As seen in the trailer, Michael has spent the last decades locked up in a mental asylum. Strode, meanwhile, is still traumatized from her encounter with the masked murderer. Strode spends her days in isolation in her home awaiting Michael to return so that she can finish him off. The trailer shows footage of Curtis training to kill Michael, including having mannequins set up around her yard for target practice. Laurie’s kitchen island is rigged to hide a secret basement.

Myers does escape the mental asylum in bloody fashion (the trailer shows asylum patients handcuffed and a laughing patient, revealed to be Myers) and goes on a murderous bender as he hunts down Laurie. One terrifying moment in the trailer occurs when Myers attacks a girl in a gas station bathroom. The trailer ended on a scary scene set in a child’s bedroom. The boy asks his babysitter to close the closet door but she has trouble. Myers suddenly appears for a shocking jump scare.

The footage earned rave reviews from press online following its debut at CinemaCon, with many agreeing it was terrifying and should satisfy “Halloween” fans. Check out the first reactions below. Universal will open “Halloween” nationwide October 19.
