‘The Oath’ Trailer: Ike Barinholtz and Tiffany Haddish Have a Bloody Thanksgiving With Their Less-Liberal Loved Ones — Watch
Ike Barinholtz directed a quartet of “Mindy Project” episodes while co-starring as that series’ car thief-turned-nurse, Morgan Tookers. This fall, he makes his feature directorial debut with “The Oath,” a political comedy he also wrote. In the film, Barinholtz and Emmy-nominated “Saturday Night Live” host Tiffany Haddish portray spouses whose place in the resistance movement is challenged by their nearest and dearest over Thanksgiving. The holiday falls the day before each American must sign “The Patriot’s Oath,” professing government loyalty.
Turkey Day turns violent for the couple while they are supposed to be expressing gratitude for the family and friends: Roadside Attractions’ first trailer finds Barinholtz at knifepoint and Haddish recovering from a tasing, plus additional bloodshed, body slamming, and handguns. Co-stars include “Portlandia” co-creator Carrie Brownstein, “SNL” veteran Nora Dunn, and Billy Magnussen and John Cho as Washington agents who sour the group’s festivities.
“Get Out” producer Sean McKittrick and his “BlacKkKlansman” colleague, Raymond Mansfield, backed the project, along with Andrew C. Robinson (“John Wick”). Barinholtz is another producer, as is his “Mindy Project” and “Blockers” producer David Stassen, with whom he co-wrote 2016’s “Central Intelligence.” Haddish will first grace the screen in next month’s “Night School,” the follow-up from her “Girls Trip” director, Malcolm D. Lee.
This spring, 15-year-old Roadside Attractions had its biggest box-office hit to date with “I Can Only Imagine” ($83 million), a Dennis Quaid movie based on the eponymous, best-selling Christian single in history. “The Oath” is also the name of a Crackle web series, and a 2016 feature from Icelandic writer-director Baltasar Kormákur.
