James Franco Talks Indiewire NYC Premiere of 'Child of God'

The long-in-the-works Cormac McCarthy adaptation attracted an eclectic group to the Tribeca Grand Hotel that include the film’s crew and star Scott Haze, singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey and Broadway legend Bernadette Peters.

“Child of God,” a work that was considered to be unfilmable by some, stars Haze as the depraved loner Lester Ballard. Haze felt a huge responsibility to honor McCarthy. “I’ve never worked that hard on anything in terms of being an actor,” Haze told Indiewire on the red carpet. “I know that at the end of the film, I had left it all on the floor.”

Of his director, Haze said, “I think he does a lot of things and people don’t give him enough credit, and I think when we look back on, like, how fearless he is, there’s something to be said.

“I can make the movies that I want to make,” Franco told Indiewire on the carpet. “And make them just for the sake of my love for these subjects. I just do whatever I can to make these things come to life. I know that they aren’t, you know, ‘Spider-Man.’ They’re not gonna make that kind of money. But we make them in a responsible way and with enough quality that they can have a life, and and hopefully because of that we’ll be able to make more and more.”

“Child of God” opens in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on August 1st.
