Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp earlier this year, stating in a court filing that the actor had been verbally and physically abusive to her throughout the entirety of their relationship. Now she has recorded a PSA for the GirlGaze Project about domestic violence and the importance of extricating oneself from such a relationship. Heard — who never mentions Depp by name in the emotional video — begins by explaining why so many women have trouble doing so: “When it happens in your home, behind closed doors, with someone you love, it’s not as straightforward. If a stranger did this…it would be a no-brainer.” Watch the full PSA below.

“Telling someone safe is the beginning of choosing yourself,” continues Heard, who donated the $7 million she received from her divorce settlement to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the ACLU. “Think about it. If I hadn’t had that, if I hadn’t had a few people that I really trust around me, a few women, support, a few friends, if I didn’t have them around me, how different my life would be.”

She ends on a hopeful, even defiant note: “Speak up. Speak up. Raise your voice. Your voice is the most powerful thing, and we, together, as women standing shoulder to shoulder, cannot and will not any longer accept silence.”
