Following his sad departure from DC’s “Justice League,” director Zack Snyder is dipping his toes back into the filmmaking waters with a stylish short, dubbed “Snow Steam Iron.” The project was kept under wraps until recently, when Snyder released a short teaser and poster on his Twitter account. By way of introduction, he wrote: “What can you do with your talented friends & family, no money and a weekend?” The answer, apparently, is quite a lot if you’re Zack Snyder.

The short clips tease an eerie and atmospheric thriller, starring an intriguing mystery woman who finds herself on the wrong side of the law. Scored with tense strings and other dramatic orchestration, the moody images evoke a noir sci-fi, with undertones of Hitchcock. The feel is very different from “Justice League,” but perhaps more intriguing.

Snyder stepped down from the superhero project in May after the sudden death of his daughter, Autumn, in March. “In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it,” he said at the time. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

“Batgirl” helmer Joss Whedon, who had a hand in writing the “Justice League” screenplay, took over directorial duties. Snyder will still be credited on the project. In the meantime, it’s nice to see he has kept himself busy throughout a difficult time.
