John Malkovich Plays Agent Dale Cooper of ‘Twin Peaks’ in First ‘Playing Lynch’ Video — Watch
We’ve yet to see any footage of next year’s “Twin Peaks” revival. In the meantime, you can whet your appetite for damn fine coffee with a new project sponsored by the David Lynch Foundation: Playing Lynch, a series of vignettes in which John Malkovich reenacts scenes from the singular filmmaker’s outré body of work. The scenes can be downloaded one by one, with proceeds going to Lynch’s transcendental meditation–inclined foundation. Watch a trailer for the series — as well as the first vignette — below.

Malkovich plays Agent Dale Cooper of “Twin Peaks” in it, providing a new take on the character made famous by Kyle Maclachlan; he’s also set to reinterpret the same show’s Log Lady in addition to John Merrick (John Hurt) of “Elephant Man,” the Mystery Man (Robert Blake) from “Lost Highway,” “Blue Velvet’s” Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) of “Eraserhead” and even Lynch himself. One scene will be released per day over the next week.
New music will also be featured. Angelo Badalamenti, who frequently works with Lynch, composed the score for the “Twin Peaks” scenes; the other artists lending their musical stylings to the project are Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips (“The Elephant Man”), Sky Ferreira (“Blue Velvet”), Zola Jesus (“Eraserhead”) and Lykke Li (“Lost Highway”).

“We would have the actual scenes playing over and over on a TV set and he could watch it,” said Sandro Miller, who directed each clip, to the Wall Street Journal. “He would be saying his lines, moving his mouth and his nose — it’s like watching this clay ball morph into something real.”
