‘Memory Box’ Exclusive Clip: Mackenzie Davis And Shane Carruth Star In Sci-Fi Short Film About Memory Recreation
Austin’s Fantastic Fest, the largest genre festival in the United States, kicks off this weekend and will feature over a hundred films from around the world. One of these is Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell’s short film “Memory Box,” starring Mackenzie Davis (“Halt and Catch Fire”) and director Shane Carruth, who previously helmed the films “Primer” and “Upstream Color.” The film follows a young mother who works at a facility where actors recreate clients’ memories for them, but when a client pushes her to break the rules and jeopardize her job, she’s forced to decide just how far she will go. In the process, reality becomes upended and memory becomes entangled with fantasy. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.
This is the third film directed and produced by Aites and Ewell. They previously co-directed and co-produced “Until the Light Takes Us,” a 2009 feature-length documentary about Norwegian black metal and its surrounding subculture. They were also the founding filmmakers behind “99% – The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film,” that delved into the Occupy movement and shed light as to why it took place. The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it was acquired by Participant Media for theatrical distribution before its television debut on the Pivot network.
Unfortunately, “Memory Box” is Aites and Ewell’s final collaboration as Aites died this past April after a long battle with cancer. Along with his films, he left behind three albums from his band Iran. “It was the most unbelievable privilege to share my life and work with Aaron for over 15 years,” said Ewell. “He never looked away from the darkness, but illuminated it so the rest of us could find our way a little more easily. Aaron’s passion for great and often obscure music, film, and art was contagious, and the world is a better place for his having been with us. Though he had much more to offer, he continues to shine a light in the darkness through his tremendous legacy of music, films, and the love he left behind.”
“Memory Box” will premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this Saturday, September 24th at 5:35pm, and will screen additionally on Tuesday, September 27th. The film will be available on VOD nationwide on Friday, September 30th.
