Colin Jost and Michael Che Won’t Make the Emmys Political, but Think ‘It’ll Probably Be #HeToo by Then’

Like “Saturday Night Live” as a whole, “Weekend Update” has been especially political these last few years. But co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost, who will also be emceeing the Emmys next month, don’t plan to inject politics into awards night: “It is kind of fun for us to do something that is not political,” Jost says in a new Vanity Fair interview.

“The exciting part is to do things about television and that particular awards ceremony and make it, in general, less political than normal. There’s a lot to celebrate in television right now. It’s a very strong time,” he adds. And with all that’s been going on, the landscape may have shifted by next month’s ceremony: “I think that by [the Emmys], people are going to be desperate to give men a chance, finally. It’ll probably be #HeToo by then,” Jost jokes.

Asked who they’re rooting for on the night in question, the co-hosts are quick to crack another joke: “Roseanne,” Che responds. “But just the politics,” Jost adds. “I don’t like the comedy; I only like the politics.”

“Game of Thrones” leads all shows with 22 Emmy nominations; it’s followed by fellow HBO drama and “SNL” itself at 21 nods apiece. This year’s ceremony will be held on September 17.
