This week, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Spike Lee would be among the recipients of its Honorary Awards (another one will go to Gena Rowlands). The decision prompts serious questions about the message the Academy is trying to send. Lee, after all, hasn’t made a big studio project in years, and rarely gets along with Hollywood — yet one of the most influential institutions in town has decided to honor his career. Is the Academy trying to offer a mea culpa?
On this week’s episode of Screen Talk, co-hosts Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson debate Lee’s career before turning to another filmmaker who has found much more success in recent years doing what he wants: Quentin Tarantino, whose new interview making the rounds has drummed up a lot of speculation about his upcoming “The Hateful Eight.” However, the film’s distributor, The Weinstein Company, isn’t exactly a heavy hitter this awards season. Kohn and Thompson discuss the Weinsteins’ recent problems before turning to a couple of new releases worth your time this weekend.
