Indiewire Hires Kate Erbland as Managing Editor
Indiewire has hired Kate Erbland as managing editor, replacing outgoing managing editor and senior writer Nigel M. Smith.
Erbland enters the position this week as Smith heads to Los Angeles to work as as an entertainment writer for The Guardian out of its newly launched L.A. bureau.
“Nigel has been a key part of the Indiewire team for five years,” said Indiewire editor in chief and general manager Dana Harris. “He began as an intern, in his first job out of college, and since then he’s become an ace interviewer, a keen editor and a fine writer. When he told me about his opportunity at the Guardian, my first thought was, ‘Damn.’ But the next reaction was to tell Nigel that it was an incredible offer and I could do nothing but wish him well. He’s going to be great, and the silver lining is I get to have him in Los Angeles.”
Erbland will transition into Smith’s position on Wednesday. She brings several years of experience as a critic, journalist and editor for a number of publications in New York and Los Angeles. A former associate editor for Film School Rejects, her previous work can be found at Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, ScreenCrush, New York Daily News, and Indiewire’s own The Playlist, among other publications. Most recently, she served as the interim news editor for The Dissolve.
“Nigel’s exit was made much more bearable when Kate accepted the position of managing editor,” Harris added. “She’s whipsmart and is an excellent writer and editor with a real flair for organization. I think she’s going to do a great job.”
Erbland will run the daily production flow for the site, reporting to Indiewire’s deputy editor Eric Kohn in New York and Harris out of Los Angeles, and coordinate on other editorial matters. She can be reached at kate@indiewire.com. Follow her on Twitter.
