In case you missed the news, “Sense8” is officially kicking off its second season with a two-hour Christmas special, premiering December 23 on Netflix. The tale of eight strangers (played by Toby Onwumere, Tina Desai, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Jamie Clayton, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, Brian J. Smith and Max Riemelt) who suddenly find themselves mentally connected was full of delightful surprises in Season 1. And while the show’s explicit sex and violence might not make it seem like a natural fit for Christmas, the themes of togetherness and family, as showcased in the trailer below, do inspire a certain level of holiday feels. (Not to mention the usual danger and threats that accompany life as a Senseate.)

Why a Christmas special? Good question. To understand more about why the show decided to make something special for the holidays, watch the video below featuring “Sense8” co-creator Lana Wachowski. The director, whom Netflix officially confirms directed every episode of Season 2, explains how her love of old-school Christmas specials ties into the show’s ongoing themes.

Following the Christmas special, the 10 episodes of Season 2 officially premiere May 5, 2017 — a great reason to get through the new year. Check out a few extra photos from Season 2 below, and enjoy counting down to next week.
