“Unbroken Glass” is a documentary directed by filmmaker Dinesh Das Sabu about his journey to uncover the truth following a family tragedy. Set to make its world premiere at the 2016 Seattle South Asian Film Festival on October 22, IndieWire has your first look at the film in the trailer below.

At the age of six, Sabu and his older siblings became orphans. With little to no idea who his parents were or where they came from, he decided to piece together their story and his in a documentary. Filmed over the course of five years, he soon discovered silenced family history of mental illness and disturbing truths – his mother was schizophrenic and died by suicide – all while reconciling the past and confronting the trauma of losing his parents.

“I hope that telling my family’s story will raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental illness, while at the same time empower suicide survivors and families of the mentally ill to share their stories,” said Das Sabu. “It’s been a long road—living through these events and the filmmaking process—but I’m very proud that it’s done, and excited to meet an audience with it.”

The film was produced by Sabu, R. Patrick Lile and Kartemquin Films. Executive Producers are Gordon Quinn, Leslie Simmer, Justine Nagan, Betsy Steinberg, and Melissa Sage Fadim. The film was edited by Matt Lauterbach, with music by Joshua Abrams.

He previously worked as a cinematographer on Kartemquin’s 2013 film “American Arab” and “The Homestretch” (2014), as well as did cinematography on “Waking in Oak Creek”(2014), and the upcoming “How To Build a School in Haiti, which he is also co-producing, and “End of Love,” among others.

“Unbroken Glass” will also be screened at the Dallas Videofest on October 23 and will premiere in Chicago on November 2 as part of the Kartemquin Fall Festival.
