October 31, 1978 may not be a date that will live in infamy, but horror fans will always remember it for beginning the “Halloween” mythos. It’s still going strong four decades later, with Jamie Lee Curtis returning to the slasher franchise that made her a scream queen and David Gordon Green taking over for John Carpenter in the director’s chair. A new trailer for the latest entry in this enduring saga gives Michael Myers’ murderous exploits the true-crime treatment.

Beginning with grainy, black-and-white footage, it offers a refresher on how this all came about: Myers, then just six years old, murdered his sister on Halloween night, 1963; he escaped protective custody 15 years later wearing his now-iconic expressionless mask and killed many more. “You don’t believe he’s the boogeyman?” Laurie Strode (Curtis) asks a man after he inquires as to Michael’s intentions. “Well, you should. In this town, Michael Myers is a myth — a ghost story to scare kids. But this boogeyman is real, and now he’s back.”

“Halloween” received largely positive reviews upon its TIFF premiere earlier this month, with IndieWire’s Eric Kohn calling it “a kind of cracked-mirror variation on its precedent, caked in dust, but reflecting the same deep-seated fears” and praising Curtis’ performance.

Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, and Virginia Gardner co-star in the film, which Green wrote alongside Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley. Universal Pictures will release “Halloween” on October 19.
