Review: ‘Girls’ Season 4, Episode 7, ‘Ask Me My Name’: Closure Might Be Coming

Love her or hate her
This week it’s a trick question. Just when we think we’re
starting to love the new Hannah, who makes solid life choices and goes on dates
with great guys like Fran, she jeopardizes it all by taking her date to
Mimi-Rose’s latest art show. Within seconds it becomes apparent that Hannah has
been keeping tabs on Adam and his new girlfriend, and isn’t as ready to move on
as we previously hoped. The kicker is that we’re led to believe that perhaps
even Hannah herself didn’t realize it, and that this journey was her trying to
gain some strange sort of closure.
Another cringe-worthy
moment
Rather than dealing with Adam in a quick, private moment and
salvaging the night, Hannah opted to hash things out in front of her date,
resulting in Fran’s quick getaway and yet another face-palm moment. Only
slightly less awkward was when Marnie called Hannah out in front of everyone,
not even trying to hide her disdain at seeing her friend there.
Runner-up goes to the weird plot twist in which Mimi-Rose
insisted that she take a cab with Hannah, while Adam get to know her ex in
another cab.

Elijah + Hannah = co-masturbating?
A realization
After several references about supporting fellow women in
the arts, Mimi-Rose and Hannah finally had an opportunity to come face-to-face
on more equal footing, forcing the women to realize that they have more in
common than they previously thought. Of course we couldn’t get there without
some completely random shenanigans involving a hazardous cab ride, former
sexual partners (shout out to guest star Zachary Quinto), and plenty of
snacks.
A growth spurt
Throughout the installment Hannah went from acting like a
grownup to being a hissy fit throwing ex girlfriend, then settled into
something in between by the episode’s end. Her ability to accept Mimi-Rose
after their adventures and heart-to-hearts, and then give her well wishes to
Adam before bowing out, was akin to Hannah realizing that she actually needed
to let the situation go for once. And potentially settle on herself, and what
she wants from life.
This week in
friendship
Just when you thought Adam and Jessa had developed a kind of
friendship that was unique and different from everyone else in the group thanks
to their shared experiences with addiction, Jessa went ahead and revealed her
true intentions behind setting Adam up with Mimi-Rose: so that she could have
Mimi-Rose’s ex all to herself. If Jessa actually isn’t pregnant by the time the
fourth season ends we should all be surprised.
Vote for Ray
Since Ray wasn’t featured in the episode, we can only assume
he was too busy starting his campaign to actually show up to the art opening.
Shoshanna was also absent, leading us to believe that she was either too busy
getting ready for some big dates with Scotty (Jason Ritter) or else she’s
Hannah’s one true and loyal friend, who wouldn’t be caught dead at Adam’s new
girlfriend’s show.

goes to…
“You try because you’re an artist. And I couldn’t do it
so I quit.” – Hannah, realizing she could actually be friends with someone
like Mimi-Rose and her “dollface.”
“Girls” airs Sundays at 9pm on HBO.
