Why Is Hollywood Still So Sexist?

Rose McGowan shocked the industry this week when she tweeted an offensive demand from her manager regarding the actress’ wardrobe on a movie project. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Kohn and Thompson begin by scrutinizing this incident and contemplating whether it’s indicative of a larger problem in Hollywood. No matter how progressive the studios get, the sexism remains. What gives? We search for some answers.
Fortunately, there’s more to talk about this week than just shortcomings of the industry — like new movies, for example. One of them is “What Happened, Miss Simone?,” the Nina Simone documentary released this week by Netflix. Kohn and Thompson discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this fascinating project, and also dig into some of the company’s other new offerings, including the Wachowskis’ “Sense8.” But that’s not the only new television show worth talking. Our hosts both watched the season premiere of “True Detective” and weigh in. (For more on those shows and others, don’t miss our weekly TV podcast.)

Still, with all this TV talk, is anyone going to the movies? The episode concludes by exploring the strange equation of this summer’s box office, which is healthy for Hollywood but less so for indies.
