Amblin Entertainment has snapped up the rights to a spec script about an alien invasion called “The Fall,” Deadline reports.

Written by Australian writer Pete Bridges, whose first screenplay “Resurface” was picked up by Todd Garner’s Broken Road Productions after making The Black List in 2015, “The Fall” represents a return to the high-concept adventure genre for Amblin, which has a mandate to produce more titles combining family stories and out-of-this-world plots.

The movie will center on a newly divorced couple fighting to survive and save their children during an alien invasion in and around Atlanta, Georgia. The story bears a striking resemblance to Steven Spielberg‘s 2005 hit “War of the Worlds,” which starred Tom Cruise as a divorced father in the midst of an alien attack. Dakota Fanning played Cruise’s daughter in the film, which grossed more than $500 million at the worldwide box office.

Bridges’s first script “Resurface” is about “an underwater earthquake that decimates a research crew working at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, leaving two survivors with limited resources to ascend 35,000 feet and reach the surface before their life support runs out.”

Bridges is represented by Verve Talent and Literary Agency and managed by Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner.
