Most people associate Jonathan Demme with his horror classic and five-time Oscar winner “The Silence of the Lambs,” which makes his next film, concert doc “Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids,” seem like a pretty surprising choice. But let’s not forget that Demme simply adores the genre, having directed the iconic Talking Heads doc “Stop Making Sense” and added concert flourishes to his recent Meryl Streep rocker drama “Ricky And The Flash.” All of this is to say Demme is an ideal man for the gig, and he expectedly knocks it out of the park.

“Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids” brings the viewer up and close and personal to the music superstar’s final show of his 20/20 Experience World Tour, which took place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena in January 2015. Demme mixes concert footage with behind-the-scenes preparation to create an intimate look at one of music’s biggest stars.

In his positive review, IndieWire Senior Film Critic David Ehrlich raved, “If nothing else, this loving — borderline fetishistic — concert movie makes a compelling case for the musicianship, artistry, and sheer athleticism of pop music…it argues that the best way to truly know a performer is to see them on stage.”

The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month and debuts on Netflix on October 12. Watch the official trailer below.
