Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Paterson’ Gets Awards-Friendly Release Date From Amazon And Bleecker Street

Jim Jarmusch‘s Cannes premiere “Paterson” will hit the big screen just in time for this year’s awards season, thanks to Amazon and Bleecker Street. Variety reports that the Adam Driver-starring film will get a platform release at the end of the year, debuting on December 28 — just in time to make the awards-qualifying cut-off — and will expand its theatrical release in subsequent weeks.

The film, about a New Jersey bus driver going about his daily routine, was hailed at Cannes, where it premiered in May. Our own Eric Kohn wrote in his Cannes review that it’s Jarmusch’s most personal film yet, good enough for the film to earn an A rating.

Although the film doesn’t offer much in the way of plot, Kohn found much to be admired in its style and tone, writing: “A handful of conflicts come and go, but they’re so expertly threaded into the movie’s gentle rhythmic flow that they never hijack the bigger picture. While unexpected events pierce the slow-going pace, they arrive like the climaxes of stanzas that speak to the overall design. The thematic clarity injects an overarching intrigue into every scene, with Paterson visibly trapped between his need to express himself artistically and the struggle to do it any other way.”

Amazon has snapped up a number of indie heavy-hitters in the past few months, including “Manchester By the Sea,” another festival premiere that’s been earmarked for awards attention since it debuted at Sundance in January. That film will be released in November with Roadside Attractions with the theatrical assist.

As Variety notes, “as part of its strategy, Amazon finances or buys films and partners with an indie company, such as Roadside or Bleecker, to distribute them in theaters. It then gets streaming rights for its Amazon Prime subscription service.” There’s no word yet when the film will be available to stream, but it looks poised to make a big — and personal — splash in the theatrical space later this year.
